Open source, GPL license, HTML5 video player -... →
With the heavy movement away from Flash for playing video on the web over to HTML5 there have been quite a few new HTML5 video players to come out. This is the first one I’ve seen that is both open source and GPL(commercial and non-commercial use).

How to get free wifi at Starbucks
As a freelancer I go to coffee shops quite a bit and other businesses with wifi. I typically only go to places with free wifi and there are quite a few of those nowadays. One place that would be nice to go to but partners with AT&T for wifi is Starbucks.  There is a way around this though which is pretty simple to do. Purchase a Starbucks gift card(minimum is $5) - the amount on the card has...

The free section in Craigslist →
The free section in Craigslist is where you can post free items you’d like to give away or find some pretty nice treasures from other people. Today alone I found(all in decent condition) the following items: Air hockey table Hot tub Trampoline Most of the items are from someone moving and not wanting to move it. It’s also a great way to get rid of your own items that aren’t...

Fonolo - avoid voice recognition phone menus →
Voice based phone menus have become fairly popular with businesses recently, personally I’d rather stick with the numbers until it’s more accurate.  Most of the time it botches what you say and you end up wanting to punch them through the phone. I’m pretty excited about Fonolo and it looks like they are in the runnings for a Webby as well up against Tumblr, Dropbox and a few...

Osmek - a new publishing platform that believes... →
The publishing platform is a hosted service within the cloud and doesn’t look to be downloadable.  All of the content you put into the platform is available via their API in pretty much any format you can imagine, this is a good thing and means you can bring your content with you whenever. Osmek takes care of quite a few core features that a site typically needs such as: Pages Blog ...

Real time web traffic visualization →
Pretty cool new product built on Node.js which utilizes the open sockets API to give you actual real time feedback of your traffic by updating the interface 20 times a second. Check out the demo on the site to get a better idea of how awesome it is.

Community compost service with soil rewards  →
The program is going to launch in Washington, DC only fairly soon and will possibly expand in the near future.  We make “reduce, reuse, recycle” easy. We provide you with a bin. You fill the bin with what you used to call garbage: food scraps, coffee grounds, all sorts of stuff. We pick it up once a week.

How to get a basic site up and running
AJ: Hey man, I'm actually going to buy the website today/soon. You sent me those links of places to purchase domains, but now I can't find 'em. I'm just wonder what a good site is to purchase from and what I should get. Thanks a lot, Nick.
Nick: Get the domain from godaddy.com. Then go create a site over at http://weebly.com, it's free and really easy to get something up pretty fast. You should be able to upload videos to youtube or vimeo and put them on your weebly site as well. After you've outgrown weebly then I can help you with the other options that are available. Weebly will be a good start and it works really well for a portfolio type site. Check out Tim Ferriss' site, yours will probably be somewhat similar since it's basically a resume for him. http://www.timferriss.com/

Looking at older versions of a web site
John: Nick What is the Google tool where you can go and look at websites that have been archived. I want to see something on a page that has been removed recently. You Da Best. John.
Nick: There isn't a google tool besides just the cached page within google. You can try searching a specific site by doing something like "site:example.com cats" to see if they have the cached page somewhere. If that doesn't work then you can try out the way back machine or web archives at http://web.archive.org/

Urban Tea Loft's new website
I’m pretty excited to be working on Urban Tea Loft’s new web site. I’ll basically be refocusing their site and giving more control back to them. Right now they are having a big problem with being able to control and update the site with new events and other important pieces of information.  The look and feel will remain somewhat similar since their branding and image isn’t...

The suits in Ironman were made partially/fully with 3-D printers. um, awesome. Designs sketched, suit printed. http://ow.ly/1JWLI In the original Ironman they didn’t use 3-D printers to make the suits which meant they were a little bit bulkier and harder to act in. Now that 3-D printers have come around they used them to print the suits in Ironman.  This works out great for the movie...
